Your note yesterday has come to hand.

I have to point out that the sugestion that the Fort- uguese Minister shoull come to Tanton originated with the Portuguese, so that they must have bad confideas in our desire to arrive at a just and equitable settlement without the necessity of lenavling, as earnest of such desire and good faith, the rascission of in aot which is entirely withir our rights, legal as well as moral.
